Can Adults Really Learn the Violin Online? What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you are an adult who has always wanted to learn the violin, you may have wondered whether online lessons can really work.

Perhaps you have never played an instrument before and are wondering if you can actually learn from home. Or maybe you played the violin years ago and are thinking about returning to it, but you are not sure where to start.

You may also be wondering whether a teacher can really see what you are doing through a screen.

The answer is yes. Adults can absolutely learn the violin online, and I have found that online lessons can work particularly well for adults who are genuinely motivated to learn and are willing to practise between lessons.

For me, the most important thing is not whether a lesson takes place in a room together or online. It is the relationship between the student, the teacher and the music.

Why Online Violin Lessons Can Work So Well for Adults

Adults often have busy lives. There may be work, family, travel and countless other commitments competing for your time.

One of the advantages of online violin lessons is that you can learn from your own home without having to spend time travelling to and from a lesson.

You can simply pick up your violin, prepare your space and begin your lesson.

For someone who is working or has a busy schedule, this can make it much easier to maintain regular weekly lessons.

There is also something very comfortable about learning in your own environment. You are in a familiar space, with your own violin, and you can practise in the same place where you have your lesson.

For adults who are serious about learning, I think this can make a real difference.

But Can a Teacher Really See What You Are Doing Online?

This is probably one of the biggest questions people have when they first consider online violin lessons.

The answer is that, with the right setup, there is a great deal that a teacher can see and hear during an online lesson.

I can observe your posture, your bow hold, your left hand, your bowing and the way you are holding your violin. I can listen carefully to your intonation, your tone and the way you are approaching the music.

Of course, online lessons are not exactly the same as standing next to someone in the same room. But that does not mean that meaningful and detailed teaching cannot take place.

In many ways, online lessons encourage students to become more aware of what they are doing themselves.

Over time, you begin to listen more carefully and notice things about your own playing. You start to recognise when something does not feel or sound quite right, rather than always relying on someone else to tell you.

That independence is an important part of becoming a musician.

What Happens If You Are a Complete Beginner?

If you are an adult who has never played the violin before, you may feel nervous about starting online.

You might wonder whether you will know how to hold the violin, how to use the bow or even where to begin.

You don't need to know any of this before your first lesson.

Learning the violin is a process, and the purpose of having a teacher is to guide you through it.

We begin with the foundations and gradually build from there. This includes learning how to hold the violin comfortably, developing your bow hold, understanding how to place your fingers and beginning to produce a good sound.

It takes time to coordinate everything when you first start, and that is completely normal.

One of the things I particularly enjoy about teaching adult beginners is watching them slowly realise that they are capable of doing something they may have once thought was impossible.

At first, everything can feel unfamiliar. But week by week, things begin to make more sense.

Then one day, you suddenly realise that you are actually playing.

That moment is incredibly rewarding.

What If You Played the Violin Years Ago?

Online violin lessons can also be a wonderful option for adults who are returning to the violin.

Perhaps you played when you were younger but stopped when you went to university, started working or simply became busy with life.

You may be surprised by how much you remember.

Even if your technique feels rusty, the experience you had previously can give you a foundation to build on. We can look at where your playing is now and work out where you would like to go next.

You might want to rebuild your technique, return to playing pieces you remember from the past or perhaps challenge yourself with something completely new.

There is no need to feel that you have to start again from the beginning.

The aim is to help you reconnect with the violin and rediscover the enjoyment of playing.

Do You Need to Be Good at Music Before You Start?

Absolutely not.

You do not need to consider yourself "musical" before you begin learning the violin.

You do not need to be able to read music fluently.

You do not need to have perfect pitch.

You do not need to have played another instrument.

What you do need is curiosity, patience and a willingness to learn.

Learning the violin does take commitment. It is not an instrument that you can master overnight, and there will be moments when things feel difficult.

But that is also part of what makes the progress so rewarding.

I believe that genuine passion and determination are incredibly powerful.

Adults often choose to learn because they genuinely want to. They are not necessarily learning because someone else has told them they should. They are doing it because they love music and have decided that they want to create music for themselves.

That is something I really value as a teacher.

How Important Is Practice?

Practice is one of the most important parts of learning the violin.

Your lesson gives you guidance, but the real progress happens when you pick up your violin during the week and work on what we have discussed.

You do not necessarily need to practise for hours every day.

What matters is developing a regular routine and learning how to practise effectively.

This is something I help students with during lessons.

I am also available on WhatsApp during the week if students have questions while they are practising.

Sometimes you may be unsure about something we worked on in your lesson. You might want to check whether you are practising something correctly or need a little clarification before your next lesson.

Being able to ask questions during the week can help you practise with more confidence and keep your progress moving forward.

Can Adults Prepare for Violin Exams Online?

Yes.

Online violin lessons can also be suitable for adults who want to work towards ABRSM or Trinity examinations.

Exams can provide a clear goal and a sense of direction, particularly if you enjoy working towards something specific.

However, I don't believe that examinations should be the only reason to learn.

For many adults, the greatest reward comes from simply becoming a better musician.

You may want to learn a particular piece, improve your technique, develop your tone or simply be able to pick up your violin and play music that you love.

The direction of your lessons should reflect what you want to achieve.

Can Online Violin Lessons Really Lead to Playing With Other People?

This is something I feel particularly strongly about.

One of the most rewarding things I have seen as a teacher is students becoming confident enough to play with other people.

Learning the violin does not have to be something you do alone in your home.

You may eventually want to join an orchestra, play in an ensemble or simply make music with friends.

There is something very special about the moment when you move from practising alone to becoming part of a group.

You have to listen to the people around you, respond to what is happening and contribute your own part to the music.

It creates a completely different experience.

I have a great deal of experience of playing with other musicians, and I know how much enjoyment and connection can come from being part of a musical community.

This is also part of my long-term vision for online teaching.

I would love to reach a point where students who have met through their online lessons can eventually meet in person, attend concerts together in London and perhaps even have opportunities to play together.

Online lessons can be the beginning of that journey.

What Equipment Do You Need for an Online Violin Lesson?

You do not need a complicated setup to begin.

You will need your violin, a computer, tablet or suitable device, and a reliable internet connection.

It is helpful to have your device positioned so that your teacher can see you and your violin clearly.

The exact setup can depend on your space and equipment, and we can discuss this before your first lesson if you are unsure.

The most important thing is that you have enough space to hold your violin and bow comfortably and that your teacher can clearly see your playing.

Are Online Violin Lessons Right for You?

Online violin lessons may be a good option if you are an adult who:

• Has always wanted to learn the violin.

• Is completely new to the instrument.

• Is returning to the violin after years away.

• Wants to learn from the comfort of home.

• Has a busy schedule and wants to avoid travelling to lessons.

• Wants to work towards ABRSM or Trinity examinations.

• Wants to learn for the love of music rather than exams alone.

• Is motivated to practise and develop their playing.

• Would eventually like to play with other musicians.

For me, one of the most rewarding things about teaching adults is seeing the change that takes place over time.

I see students become more confident. I see them begin to trust themselves. I see them realise that they are capable of doing something they once thought they could not.

And sometimes, I see them take that next step and begin playing with other people.

That is when learning the violin can become something much bigger than simply having a lesson once a week.

It becomes part of your life.
